How to Avoid Lip Filler Migration & Botched Lips- 5 Tips YOU NEED to know!

5 Tips you MUST KNOW before you get Lip Fillers in order to avoid Migration and Botched Lips.

YES! You can avoid lip filler migration from happening.

First and foremost, you need to know that your lips are unique and unlike any other feature on our face because they’re tubular structures that are bound by very distinctive borders.

This is why it’s so painfully obvious when someone’s lips are over-injected.

#1   When it comes to cosmetic enhancements, there’s a spectrum.

There’s a spectrum at which lip filler will no longer enhance your beauty and a tipping point at which the more filler you get injected into your lips, the more your lip tissue will take on an unnatural looking appearance 👉 which brings us to tip #2

#2- Respect Your Unique anatomy and have Realistic Expectations

Lips come in a variety of different shapes and sizes and ancestry often plays a role in lip size and our upper to lower lip ratios.

In general, people of European and Caucasian ancestry tend to have thinner, more retrusive lips (they don’t stick out as much) with the smallest upper lip volume and an upper lip that constitutes around a third of the total lip volume, and a lower lip of around two-thirds.

People of Sub-Saharan African and East-Asian ancestries share characteristics of larger lips that are more protrusive (they stick out more) because of more soft tissue.  In people of African ancestry the upper and lower lip volumes can be nearly the same size, a 1:1 ratio.

As cosmetic injectors, we’re like facial sculptors in that we are dealing with faces which are 3 dimensional and we are not starting off with a blank sculpture which we can just mold into any lip size and shape you desire we can only work with what we have. Therefore, if you have very thin lips I cannot give you Kerry Washington or Angelina Jolie lips and if I tried, that’s when we get into trouble which leads us to tip #3

#3  Avoid the look of “Induration or Hardness

This is by far the biggest red flag when it comes to unnatural looking lips.

Induration means a localized hardening of soft tissue of the body in which the area becomes firm, but not as hard as bone.

This hardness or induration happens when too much filler is placed into the tissue of your lips, that’s when they begin to take on unnatural looking characteristics which can give a rolled, hard/stiff looking appearance.

There are 2 Ways to Avoid this look of induration/hardness

  1. Don’t get injections done in which too much volume is added

  2. Don’t get lip injections done too frequently

This is precisely why I offer partial syringes for lip enhancements. One size done not fill all.

Rule #4 Avoid Lip Filler blindness

Lip filler blindness is when you don’t realize that you have lip filler already in your lips, because each time you get lip filler your brain will normalize what it’s used to seeing. This often leads  to the desire to go bigger and bigger each time you get lip filler because you forget what your original lip size was.

Lip filler blindness is why people eventually end up having botched looking lips, even though they may have started out with natural looking lips the first few times they got lip filler.

Lip filler blindness is real which is why botched lips and lip filler migration is a pandemic.

How to Avoid Lip Filler Blindness

I tell my patients to keep a picture of themselves before getting lip filler that we can reference back to.  This can be a helpful way to avoid lip filler blindness otherwise they may continuously want more and more lip filler.

We are influenced by what we are around so if you’re around people with over injected lips that’s gonna become normalized to you.

Rule #5- Choose the right Cosmetic Injector

Remember this saying when you’re looking for an injector

“Don’t get high on your own supply”

As a cosmetic injector you have unlimited access to filler.

Look at your injector, what do they look like? If their lips look done they’ve probably lost sense of what natural lip anatomy looks like and have lip filler blindness where all sense of normalcy and natural lip anatomy has gone out the window. Sometimes you may even notice the staff who work at the practice look “done,” and if so, chances are they’re getting treatments done at their workplace.

You should also look at their before & after photos. Do their patients lips look natural?
